Text Box: Not quite, but the expression of Terrior (geology, slope, climate, and varietal).  “Marin’s Vineyard” is a tiny vineyard (5 1/2 acres) located in the Lockwood Valley near Lake San Antonio in New San Antonio Valley AVA in Southern Monterey County, California.  We have 4 1/2 acres of Syrah and 1 acre of Vognier.

Where does the vineyard name come from, well that’s easy, as its named after Marin Wolgamott, who at the age of 6 when the vineyard was developed, was involved from the get go.  She was involved in the surveying, picking rocks, placing grow tubes, and… well the list goes on; as this was an all out family work effort, up to the grandparents on both sides.  The vineyard is planted on a slope averaging 7% with a soil type identified as the Nacimiento Soil Series.  The first representative soil layer is comprised of dark brown, calcareous silty clay loam followed by these calcareous shale and Rocks, and More Rocks, then a layer of weathered sandstone.  Some of these rocks take on weird formations, as if water ran through them.  Picking up rocks was a daily chore, as truckloads of rocks were removed prior to planting.

Syrah was chosen because of its growing character to the Southern Rhone and Australian Shiraz growing regions of warm climates, which the Lockwood Valley of Southern Monterey County delivers.  In the Spring of 2007, one acre was grafted over to Vognier with an expected first harvest in the Fall of 2008.

And for those who are watching Marin grow up, she now will tell you she is now 15 years old, and that the best part of growing winegrapes, is eating them.

Text Box: Marin’s Vineyard 2005 Syrah
The winemaker for the 2005 vintage was Steve Pessagno.  Steve is a very well known winemaker in Monterey County (where he practices his trade) and nationwide.  The Marin’s Vineyard 2005 Syrah was released in late December of 2007 and is a very limited release with only 300 cases being produced.  It is very pleasant wine and we think it is our best yet!!

Moorewood 2001 Syrah—Marin’s Vineyard

Wine Enthusiast rating of 90 points–Excellent & Editor’s Choice (June 2004)
Paso Robles Mid-State Fair Golden Spur Syrah Challenge—Silver Medal (July 2003)
The 2001 Moorewood Syrah is turning heads, and has even converted Merlot and white wine drinkers.  This wine appeals to recent red wine converts all the way up to those with experienced pallets.   We have been getting very good feedback from those who have stumbled across this new wine.  The designated “Marin’s Vineyard” Syrah is bringing its own style of lively berry fruit forward nuances and structure with a smooth after finish.  For us we don’t make wine tasting complex, the bottom line is people are liking it.  But credit should be given where credit is due, that the wine was produced and bottled by Testarossa Winery, under winemaker Ed Kurtzman.  The decision to pick comes from the winemaker. Marin was adamant about following Ed throughout the vineyard while he tasted the berries.

Pumari 2001 Syrah
The 2001 Pumari Syrah was made and released by Robert Talbot Vineyards in Gonzales California, maker of World Class Wines.  It is a very fruit forward wine and due to its popularity and limited release, you just might not be able to find this one anymore.
